In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith a Canadian gym teacher was trying to keep his gym class active on a rainy day. He wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto the at 10 feet high. Unlike modern basketball nets, this peach basket still had its bottom, and balls had to be retrieved by a janitor, with a ladder, after each point was scored, this was not efficient, so the bottom of the basket was removed, allowing the balls to be poked out with a long stick each time.
Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The first balls made specifically for basketball were brown, and it was in the late 1950s that Tony Winkle, searching for a ball that would be more visible to players and spectators alike, introduced the orange ball that is now in common use. Dribbling was not in the original game except for a bounce pass. Passing the ball were the main use of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually brought into the game, but it was limited by the shape of early balls. Whichever team got the most points won the game.
